William W. Smith

October 22, 1919 — November 3, 2016

Age 97 of Elmira, NY, passed away at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center on Thursday, November 3rd, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife of 76 years, Dorla; daughter, Linda (Arthur) Gilbert; son, James (Joan) Smith; daughter, Cheryl (Robert) Jones; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Gertrude and Daisy. He proudly served his country in World War II with the 1st Armored Division and was a member of the American Legion. Bill was a foreman and molder at Chemung Foundry and drove School Bus. He loved sports- golf, bowling, coaching and playing softball, and also taught bowling for many years. Bill and Dorla were known as the "Tennessee Sweethearts" and sang country music for many years and in later years sang at churches, senior homes and hospitals. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira/Southport on Tuesday, November 8th from 11:00AM to 1:00PM. Funeral services will follow there at 1:00PM. Pastor Kevin Austin will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads. Bill's guestbook may be signed at www.olthof.com.
